About us
The Diocese of Badulla was erected in 1972 under the leadership of Rt. Rev. Dr. Leo Nanayakkara with a limited number of Priests striving hard in fostering Pastoral care and the spiritual development of people of UVA province which was previously under the territory of Diocese of Kandy. Uva Province consist of Badulla and Monaragala districts a mixture of villages and tea estates. It was considered
poor and marginalized, with few resources in education and other basic infrastructure specially the healthcare in rural and remote estates.
While working for the enhancement of spirituality of the person, the Diocese of Badulla confronted the need to attend to the care and upliftment of the physique of those who are sick in mind and body to ensure the total wellbeing of the person.
In 1993 the Diocese of Badulla, under the leadership of Rt. Rev. Dr. Edmond J. Fernando O.M.I. sought a more pragmatic and yet service-oriented solution to minimize the gap in providing healthcare access to the poor and marginalized while catering to the private healthcare need of the province. Eventually, the Diocese of Badulla was able to acquire then existed Central Hospital Badulla with the staff and their services continued to the sick people of the province.

In parallel, free Medical Camps were conducted monthly in the marginalized remote estates and villages areas where healthcare facility was either scarce or nil.
